Travel Gifts for Boys

DIY Lego Travel Case
I have had a few years of experience under my belt making gifts for my girls. So on our last road trip to Disneyland I whipped up several travel gifts for my girls. The ideas just came flying in. Then my thoughts turned to my little buddy and travel gifts for little boys were harder to think up.  I looked around and found two ideas that I thought my son would like and keep him occupied on the drive.

DIY Lego Travel Case tutorial

I saw the first idea on Pinterest and it is from Finley and Oliver. Unfortunately the link doesn’t work but their travel lego box was the inspiration behind the lego travel case that I made for my boy.   I started out with an unfinished wood box from Hobby Lobby.  I wanted the box to be small enough for my son to hold in his hands.  The box was also easy for him to open by himself which was important to me.  I didn’t want to have to be turning around every few seconds to open the box for him.   The first thing I did was put two pieces of duct tape together.  One was longer than the other and so the sticky sides that hung over helped to stick it to the box. I put the duct tape on the box to cover the notch out.    This allowed more legos to be put into the box.  I painted the box blue and sanded down the edges.  I used E-600 glue to glue on a small lego plate to the top of the box.  I added my son’s name in vinyl to personalize the back of the box.

You can see from the pics above that we don’t have a lot of boy legos.  I bought the duplo legos for him but he likes the little ones better.  If you follow me on Instagram that you will know though that he is working with what he’s got :).

My son has LOVED this box!! Number one travel gift for sure!! We use it all the time now.  I pack it in our church bag and he plays with legos at church.  The great part is that you can switch out the legos inside and it is a whole new experience each time!

DIY Car Roll Up

The next travel gift still gets played with at home and at church but was an even bigger hit on the road.  I don’t know if the magic has faded somewhat but it kept him busy for longer than I anticipated while we were driving.   It is a car roll-up and I used the tutorial from Homemade by Jill .  It was fantastic!   No need to reinvent the wheel there.

I used heat transfer to put my numbers on.  I also put the velcro strap in the wrong place.  I didn’t read the tutorial all the way through and did a car “roll-up” instead of a folded  car mat.  I still like it though!

Have you made any travel gifts for boys?

Thanks for stopping by!
